If you are renting the house he can not put a mechanic's lien on the house because you are not the owner. He can only take you to small claims court which would be more expensive on his part, Don't let him bully you because that is what he is doing. You can actually get him in trouble for harrassment. Check to see if he has a business license and report him to either the Better Business Bureau or call the license agency and make a complaint.

What a shyster! The business arrangement was never arranged with the owner. Does your lease say you have responsibility for the lawn care? Then what will probably happen is that he may try to lien the property but, he won't have any grounds. Put it in writing date and time on it and certified mail if you can. and make a copy your landlord that you are personally taking responsibility for the lawn care at this time.Did you sign a contract with this lawn guy?I bet he uses this ploy with everyone. Might get a notice to the better business bureau too! Just a letter to them explaining the issues will put them on his trail! Give them the contact information that you have. They will try to mediate the problem for you. Keep the landlord informed!

Did you send your lawn care guy a certified letter stating that you could not afford his services any more and kept a copy of it? If yes, then he can do nothing.

If no, then he cannot put a lien on your landlord's house, since he contracted with you and not your landlord. However, he can sue you or send the problem to a collection agency, thereby ruining your credit. If you ever want to get a loan in the future, you will need to settle this dispute.

several problems here–
first you always had a verbal conversation with him–nothing in writing…and no conversations with his Office Manager or billing person.
he is not aware that you are not the owners….so he is doing the right thing by placing a lien on the property.
he most probably did not tell the office manager or office accountant of your conversation…
and - you should have called the office earlier to confirm!

so now you have both your and your owners butt in a sling.
pay the bill like a good girl, quit complaining…call the office to make arrangements ..and do not put your owner in a situation you will regret…like an eviction.

good luck :)

Since the lawn mowing agreement is between you and the lawn guy, your landlord has nothing to do with it. He can not put a lien on the house as you are not the owner of the house.
You do owe him the bill , if you did not put anything in writing, stating that you no longer want him mow the lawn. I would call him up and explain the situation to him, put it writing and mail it to him, and make some kind of offer to pay him a little at a time to pay off whatever you may owe him. Offer to try to work with him to pay it off, but explain that things are kind of tight right now.
He has no recourse against the landlord or property owner, as the agreement was between the two of you.
